Internationally renowned rehabilitation specialist Alberto Esquenazi, MD, named the inaugural John Otto Haas Chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
In recognition of MossRehab’s reputation as a national leader in medical rehabilitation, the Otto Haas Charitable Trust recently established the John Otto Haas Chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, selecting distinguished rehabilitation physician Alberto Esquenazi, MD, to serve as the inaugural chair.
“We are grateful for the generosity of the Otto Haas Charitable Trust,” says Dr. Esquenazi, MossRehab’s Chief Medical Officer and Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. “It is an honor and a privilege to be named the first recipient of this chair, which carries such a prestigious name and responsibility. All of the physiatrists who are based at MossRehab are proud of this achievement and of what this support will do for our future.”
"The funding will focus on professional development and education in physical medicine and rehabilitation," notes Dr. Esquenazi, who specializes in gait analysis. Through his work Dr. Esquenazi assists people with limitations due to accidents or neurological disorders to function better through prosthetics, orthotics and other treatments andtechnologies. “It will help us discover new ways to expand the horizons of rehabilitation science and to provide the highest levels of care with integrity and respect for the patients we serve."
The grant was recommended to the trust by John Otto Haas, who received care at MossRehab, and his wife, Janet F. Haas, MD, a physical rehabilitation and brain injury specialist who worked at the facility nearly 25 years ago.
“I always felt fortunate to be able to receive what seemed to me the best care in the world,” says John. “Janet and I are delighted to be affiliated with MossRehab and advance its research of rehabilitation medicine.”
Dr. Esquenazi, who directs MossRehab’s Sheerr Gait andMotion Analysis Laboratory, hails the Haas' as civic minded philanthropists who invest in success.
“It is a privilege to know John and Janet,” he says. “They have clearly signaled to us they believe in the work we are doing. They are hoping for bigger and better things fromMossRehab and the very talented people who work here."
MossRehab was chosen to conduct the only U.S. clinical trials for ReWalk, a revolutionary motorized suit that helps people with irreversible spinal cord injury or other walking impairments to stand, walk and climb stairs. In addition to overseeing those clinical trials, Dr. Esquenazi serves as Clinical Director of the Regional Amputee Center and Chief of the Prosthetic and Orthotic Clinic.He was recently named president of the 8,000-member American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, which honored him with its Distinguished Clinician Award. He is also a past recipient of the Albert Einstein Society Physician Leadership Award.
“The John Otto Haas Chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will help us pursue new innovations more aggressively and will support the hard work we do in developing better clinical systems of care and improving rehabilitation-related research and education,” says Dr.Esquenazi. “This is a milestone for MossRehab and for the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation.We celebrate the achievement and accept the challenge.”
