Welcome Obstetrics/Gynecology
Resident Alumni

“Maintain a learning environment to enable our residents to achieve levels of training that exceed their own expectations.”

Since returning to Einstein as Chairman over 10 years ago, it has been my dream to establish an Alumni Group and bring together all those previous residents and faculty who have contributed over the years to what we now refer to as Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia (previously known as the old Northern Division) Department of OB/GYN.

  Where We Began

Einstein Healthcare Network’s OB/GYN residency program dates back to 1948-one of the oldest in the region.  We have over 250 alumni, scattered across the country, providing superb patient care and resident teaching.

I came to Einstein in 1982, as the first Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist.  At that time there was a sense of camaraderie fostered by the Sivitz family, who sponsored the Frank Sivitz Lecture Series every year.  This event brought alumni back to campus and renewed relationships from the past.  Sadly, I think this sense of “family” has been lost through the years.

It has long been my goal to reconnect our alumni family.  Our new Einstein OB/GYN Alumni Newsletter is the first step.  My hope is that our newsletter will bring Einstein OB/GYN alumni together to learn about all the great things that have happened to Einstein Healthcare Network over the last few decades.

There’s a lot of which to be proud.  Einstein has always been dedicated to excellence in patient care. This dedication enables Einstein to provide a superb clinical experience for OB/GYN Residents.  I can proudly say that this tradition continues even under very difficult circumstances.  In fact, our Residency program is now considered one of the premier non-university affiliated academic institutions in the  country.

  Where We've Come

The Department of
OB/GYN has seen
tremendous progress:

  • Deliveries at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia have increased from 1,900 deliveries a year to over 3,000
  • Renovations to the Labor & Delivery, Antenatal Testing, and Resident Education areas
  • Development of a dedicated “Women’s Floor” on Lifter 4
  • OB/GYN clinic the first to have outpatient electronic medical records

Our department was also the first to have an outpatient electronic medical record in the OB/GYN clinic and a “best of breed” EMR on the obstetrical units. This EMR has over 6,500 clinical decision algorithms improving care in real-time and allowing us to measure the quality of care provided to these patients on a daily, monthly, and quarterly basis through its sophisticated quality reports.  These quality outcome reports confirm that Einstein’s standard of OB/GYN care is superb.

We also continue to serve a significant number of underinsured and underserved patients.  Without the dedication of our residents and faculty, these patients would not be able to receive the high quality care that is offered here.  Our ability to continue our mission would not be possible without the strategic vision of President and CEO, Barry Freedman, the guiding spirit of COO, Susan Bernini, and the tireless dedication of our faculty, who attract exceptional residents and patients to this institution.

Where We're Going

Our Residency program is flourishing.  This past year we underwent a Residency Review Committee evaluation and received a five year approval, the maximum amount of time for which any program can be approved.  Because of this five year approval, as well as the expansion of the Einstein Healthcare Network with our new hospital - Einstein Medical Center Montgomery (EMCM)- we are now able to expand our program to 5 residents per year. Einstein Montgomery affords our residents great opportunity to care for a diverse population with greater exposure to Private Attendings who do a significant number of minimally invasive, robotic and pelvic floor surgery.

The addition of Einstein Montgomery in East Norriton, PA, has been a tremendous morale booster for the entire Network.  Einstein Montgomery is the first new hospital built in Southeastern PA in more than ten years and it has caught the attention and respect of the entire Greater Philadelphia region.  I can say it was a personally satisfying and unique experience to design, complete with the most modern and sophisticated technology, and then see it built in a suburban setting conducive to Family Centered Care.

EMCM’s “Women’s Floor” houses a magnificent Labor & Delivery unit with private rooms overlooking farmland, a modern Triage unit, a Level III NICU staffed by in-house neonatal specialists so that all babies can be cared for, and a Mom/Baby Unit built specifically with the comfort of new moms in mind. Our new facility is truly spectacular and I encourage you to visit us and see what our new hospital has to offer.

With three acute care hospitals (Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, Einstein Medical Center Elkins Park, and Einstein Medical Center Montgomery), Belmont Behavioral Health, Willowcrest Semi-Acute care facility and MossRehab, Einstein Healthcare Network is a significant force in the Philadelphia healthcare market.

My goal over the next year is to establish relationships with as many Alumni as possible and hopefully see many of you return to campus.  I look forward to meeting with each and every one of you.  Please look to the Alumni Newsletter and our Alumni OB/GYN Residency website for news about the exciting things that are taking place in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Einstein Healthcare Network.
