Vene's father and grandfather served on the Board of Mt. Sinai, Northern Liberties and the Jewish Hospital to become to Albert Einstein Medical Center and served on its Board. Following his father's lead, Vene joined the Einstein Board in 1953. As a Board leader, he helped create the Albert Einstein Society and the Legacy Circle, serving as its Co-Chair from 2002-2005, and its current Chair.
In 1999, in order to adress the disproportionate number of patients with hyperglycemia/diabetes and to combat the damaging effects of the disease, Vene founded Einstein's Gutman Diabetes Institute (GDI). The staff at GDI provides education to patients, their families and healthcare providers about managing the disease to prevent such complications. Open to the community, GDI classes offered through its self-management training program empower people with diabetes to take control of their disease. The GDI staff also work with physicians in helping patients admitted to Einstein to be able to better manage their diabetes after they are discharged.
We are truly grateful to Alvin and Mary Bert Gutman for their commitment and enduring service to the Einstein community.
