The Friends of Einstein Healthcare Network’s Breast Cancer Advocacy Group Annual Education & Advocacy Event
The Breast Cancer Advocacy Group (BCAG) is dedicated to empowering women and men in the fight against breast cancer. The group advocates for patient rights, sponsors education and outreach programs, and helps underinsured and uninsured women and men in their battles against breast cancer.
On October 16th the group hosted an event which included tours of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s new exhibit Fabulous Fashion: From Dior’s New Look to Now and a luncheon featuring guest speaker, Jennifer Simmons, MD. During the luncheon, Harris and Jamie Lewin, husband and daughter of former BCAG and Friends’ member, Janet Lewin, presented the Janet Lewin Empowerment Award. This award recognized outstanding and impactful education and community outreach programs. The BCAG raised $10,000 which will be used to support programs as outlined by their mission.
“How lucky are we?” was Janet’s mantra.
Named in honor of Janet Lewin, who passed away in January of 2017, and created with a gift from the Lewin and Parker Family and friends who wanted to honor Janet’s memory. The initial gift to create the Janet Lewin Fund for Patient Education and Community Outreach was supplemented by a corporate matching gift from Johnson & Johnson. Janet’s son, Adam, is employed by J&J.
Janet Lewin was a driving force behind the work of The Friends of Einstein Healthcare Network and the Breast Cancer Advocacy Group for more than 20 years. Herself a breast cancer survivor, it was Janet’s strength, wisdom, grace and desire to give back which was an example for all.
A teacher and tireless advocate for education, Janet merged her love of education with her fierce desire to empower and inform women and men about breast cancer and made it her mission to support efforts to accomplish this goal. Einstein was an important part of her life and remains as an important part of her legacy.
The Friends of Einstein Healthcare Network are the lucky ones for having known, worked with, and loved Janet. Harris, Jamie, and Adam were actively involved in selecting the recipients of the inaugural Janet Lewin Empowerment Award. Ten Einstein programs were proposed. Harris, Jamie, and Adam began the task of working to select those most deserving. They visited programs and talked with staff and participants to get a first-hand view of how these programs are impacting the communities served by Einstein. After this exhaustive search, Fresh for All and Face to Face were selected to be recognized and receive a monetary gift from the Janet Lewin Fund for Patient Education and Community Outreach.
Thank you to the Reichlin Family and HRSI for sponsoring this amazing event.
