Spring is often thought to be a time of new birth and rebirth and it is also a time to celebrate mothers. This past spring, Maddy and Harvey Rovinsky, in partnership with MamaCITA – A Mothers’ Cooperative in the Arts, joined with staff from Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia’s Ob/Gyn Department and Labor and Delivery Units to celebrate mothers, babies and families. The Rovinskys, long-time friends to Einstein, generously gifted the hospital with an installation of five beautiful paintings celebrating the art of women inspired by their lives as mothers.
The paintings were installed in the lobby of the Lifter Building, which serves as the main entryway to the maternity and NICU units. This follows another MamaCITA installment at Einstein Medical Center Montgomery in 2012.
Rovinsky felt that the entryway for Einstein Philadelphia should be soothing for parents and their families. “We have beautiful rooms upstairs and I wanted this entryway to fit with that aesthetic. I thought there’s no better time to present these than Mother’s Day week.”
Megan Grugan, a MamaCITA member and former NICU nurse, explained that the mission of MamaCITA is to help their artists fulfill their potential as mothers and artists. With this project, Grugan explained, “Our goal was to provide comfort and caring through the expression of art. We wanted to create a warm and welcoming environment in these spaces, embracing motherhood and the community that Einstein serves. Einstein sees such a cross-section of the city’s patients and we wanted the display to be inclusive and representative of all mothers.”
